Poroshenko insiders have put the blame for Mikheil Saakashvili’s Sept. 10 break through the border on Interior Minister Arsen Avakov, Ukrayinska Pravda writes Sept. 25.
UP quotes its sources as saying, “Avakov let the president down. Border guards kept demanding the interior minister for reinforcements since 17.00 Sept. 9, but no National Guard troops had been sent.
On Thursday, Saakashvili met with tycoon Ihor Kolomojsky, Avakov’s buddy. On Sunday Avakov who was a strong opponent of Saakashvili’s return to Ukraine had a sudden change of heart.
Another UP source blamed Avakov for sitting on the fence during the entire border saga.
President’s office complaints about Avakov’s poor performance can be explained by the fact that during his 3 years as interior minister Avakov, with the National Guard, political allies and clout, has become a mighty counterbalance to Poroshenko, UP concludes.
