As the situation at coal mines in the separatist Donbas republics is getting worse, the miners of 3 mines, Yasynivska-Hlyboka, Kirova and Cheluskintsiv, went on strike protesting wage arrears reaching several months, Oborona Mariupola (Mariupol’s Defense) NGO reports on its website Aug. 6.
Miners haven’t been paid wages since March. To quell the strikers, the rebel leaders came to the mines escorted by armed separatists.
They agreed to pay 70% of their wages for March.
Similar wage delays are at other mines in the rebel-held Donbas, experts say.
There are 53 state-owned and 30 private mines in the rebel-held territories, or 55% of Ukraine’s total number of coal mines.
