Kyiv to have new police on July 1

Members of the new Ukrainian police will be dressed in $500 US uniforms made for American donations. They will be on the beat on July 1 in the capital, TCH reports June 1.

In Lviv, Kharkiv, Odesa and Dnipropetrovsk new police will begin to patrol the streets in the fall.

Like 2,000 her buddies, Olena wants to serve in a reformed police and create the force without corruption.

She has been trained for a month by US cops, 10 hours each day. New officers average 25 years in age. They are all newcomers, coming from various occupations. There are former nurses, psychologists, accountants, bakers and even toy sellers.

“I applied for the police thanks to my husband. He was in the army in Donbas,” Olena says

New police will first patrol the streets on foot. Later they will patrol in cars.

Their salaries will be high by Ukrainian standards, between 8,000 and 10,000 hryvnias ($360 and $450).
