Ukraine took 144th position among 177 countries for size of corruption, TI coordinator in the CIS states Svetlenan Savitskaya told ZN.UA Dec. 21.
According to surveys, 80% of Ukrainians say the government’s efforts to curb corruption are not effective.
“The merger of business and state is a common problem for all CIS states. As a result, highly placed officials and members of parliament, or their children, are owners of big business companies,” she said.
“In Ukraine, the degree of fusion of politics and business in Ukraine is appalling,” the TI coordinator said.
Officials and lawmakers own businesses, and this is considered normal, she said.
“In Ukraine, the tolerance of citizens toward the corrupt regime is very high,” she said.
