To let Yulia Tymoshenko run for president, a discrepancy between the Constitution and election law should be examined by the Constitutional Court, says former justice minister and head of Ukraine supreme board of justice Oleksandr Lavrynovych, speaking to Komersant-Ukrayina Aug. 27.
The provision banning persons with a prison term to run in the elections was retained from the Soviet law, he said.
Meanwhile, legal experts in Ukraine note that Yulia Tymoshenko can run in the future presidential election as candidate.
The experts point out that the Constitution does not ban ex-prisoners or persons serving their term to run and be elected.
However, the election law does not have this provision.
