Ukraine foreign ministry described as bizarre the likely sanctions proposed by the US Senate against Ukraine officials involved in the disputed trial and imprisonment of the top opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko, FM spokesman Oleh Voloshyn said, speaking on Kanal 5 Nov. 26.
“It is, to put it softly, strange to impose sanctions against law enforcement officials who were doing their jobs. It is settling the scores,” Voloshyn said.
Sanctions can be imposed when corruption and human rights abuses are massive, Voloshyn went on.
In September, the US Senate passed a resolution urging the US State Department to impose sanctions against Ukraine officials implicated in the persecution of Tymoshenko.
