Thorbjorn Jagland, the Secretary General of EC, welcomed Pres Poroshenko’s decision to submit the law on the use of Ukrainian in education to the assessment of the Venetian Commission in the wake of the law’s criticism by Ukraine’s neighbors, European Pravda reports Oct. 6.
“As a rule, the minorities in Europe must speak freely the state language of the country they live in. This is vitally important for their full participation in the life of the country.
Therefore, the state must use all it takes to ensure the minorities know the state language of their country,” the EC secretary general said. .
The law allows the language of a minority to be used in primary school alongside Ukrainian. As of Year 5, all pupils are to take their further education in Ukrainian.
