The knowledge of Ukrainian is crucial to the national security of Ukraine, Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said amid angered reaction from a number of Ukraine’s East European states with ethnic minorities in Ukraine border areas, Interfax-Ukraine reports Sept. 26.
“We must protect Ukrainian as well as the minorities’ languages. However, there are citizens of Ukraine who do not know Ukrainian at all. The issue of Ukrainian is the issue for our unity and national security,” the minister said.
Klimkin called inadmissible when Ukrainian is taught to ethnic minorities pupils only as a subject, with all other subjects taken in minority languages. This results in abominably poor knowledge of terminology by school leavers and curtails their chances of getting education and jobs.
