Serhij Konohov, a recently appointed head of SBU’s economic intelligence department, owns highly-priced property the origin of which he refuses to explain, journalists of the Schemes joint investigating program of Radio Svobnoda and UA:Pershyj TV.
In Jan. 2014, Konohov bought a 55-square meter flat in downtown Kyiv costing $150,000.
In 2015, Konohov bought a two-storey 300-square meter country house on a large land site with a pond, hot-house and training ground.
The official’s salary, even in his present top position, does not exceed UAH30,000 ($1,150) a month.
Konohov, after long wavering, refused to meet with journalists to explain the origin of his assets. SBU, assured that before entering his office, Konohov had been screened by internal security, Schemes journalists say.
The media pointed out to the posh cars owned by the officers of Konohov’s department whose cost is incompatible with their salaries.
