Yushchenko’s father collaborated with Ukraine nationalists, KGB archives indicate

Andrij Yushchenko was OUN’s agent when he worked in Western Ukraine after WWII. According to KGB archives, he remained to be an avid supporter of Ukraine independence after his return to Sumy, Center for Liberation Movement Studies quotes historian Volodymyr Vyatrovych as saying.

Andrij Yushchenko was first imprisoned for his nationalistic views by NKVD in 1937. Soon after the outbreak of WWII, he was taken prisoner by Germans and was kept in concentration camps until freed by the Americans.

After the war, the Soviets sent him to teach in Western Ukraine, a very dangerous job because of OUN reprisals against Soviet officials. As allegedly pro-Soviet, Andrij Yushchenko had to cooperate with KGB informing about the moods of his pupils and their parents. However, he ignored NKVD assignments and instead cooperated with Ukrainian nationalists, Vyatrovych says.

As school director, Yushchenko also supported OUN financially, KGB documents say.
