Soros Foundation gets in SBU sights
The Security Service of Ukraine, SBU, is screening projects implemented by the Soros Foundation and Kyiv NGOs, foundation’s executive director Yevhen Bystrytsky says.
Several Kyiv-based NGOs implementing Soros-funded projects have been approached by SBU operatives who wished to know the goals and funding of the projects, as well as how the projects might impact the course of campaigning for the Oct. 31 elections, TCN quotes Bystrytsky as saying Sept. 7.
Since none of the foundation-supported projects has a political dimension, the officials drew a blank. In line with its charter, the Soros Foundation cannot back any of the political parties in Ukraine, Bystrytsky added.
The foundation funded only those projects which were aimed at fostering the integrity and freedom of voters, he said.
Had SBU used its potential [nurtured by Ukraine taxpayers] to make elections honest and transparent, the foundations like Soros could have earmarked their funds to back the development of corruption-free democratic society, the Soros official said.
