BYuT threatens to bloc Rada’s work tomorrow
BYuT’s faction will obstruct work of the Ukrainian parliament if its agenda for the opening day on Sept. 7 doesn’t include a moratorium on utilities and consumer gas hikes announced by the cabinet on Aug. 1, BYuT’s faction whip Ivan Kyrylenko told journalists Sept. 6.In addition to the moratorium, BYUT demands that Rada address a moratorium on raising the retirement age for women and tax breaks for small and medium businesses.
To demonstrate its commitment, BYuT has announced a protest rally outside the Verkhovna Rada on Sept. 7.
However, the majority leader, Regions, say the moratorium on utilities hikes should be addressed by the Rada later, following gas talks with Russia scheduled for October.
As of Aug. 1, the national commission for energy prices raised the prices for consumer gas by 50 percent.
In line with Ukraine’s memorandum with the IMF, another 50% increase is planned for April 1, 2011.
Ukraine has also agreed with the IMF to raise women retirement age from 55 to 60 years.
