Only fools can deny US military potential, Polish president says
Poland’s Pres Bronislaw Komorowski has said the rapprochement with Russia won’t stand in Warsaw’s way to back Ukraine in its European aspirations.Poland opts for openness of the EU, favoring both westward expansion (the Balkan states) and eastward (Ukraine), he said.
“The situation is Ukraine has changed since the Orange revolution which I supported. However, we must maintain a dialog with Ukraine no matter who is in power in Kyiv now,” Komorowski told Le Monde.
Simultaneously, the Polish president stressed he wants to stick to the two major goals of his country’s foreign policy. ”We have placed our bets on the EU, wishing the EU to expand transatlantic ties. Let’s be realists. As far as the national security is concerned, only a fool would not admit the huge military potential of the United States,”, Komorowski noted.
“After all, knowing where Poland is situated [squeezed between Russia and Nato – Ed.] it’s better to be on the safe side,” Komorowski stressed.
“We are willing to build a safe European continent free from fear. Poland is taking steps to better its relations with Russia. This policy meets the demands of Poland, Russia and the entire EU. Russia has acknowledged that Poland is no lightweight in the EU. Russia has realized that our problems must be resolved on a bi-lateral basis – or we risk losing understanding. Poland opts for such rapprochement,” Komorowski added.
