Regions change local elections law

Introducing his bill, Yefremov admitted the earlier version of the law included some provisions which run counter to democratic principles and international standards, Ukrayinska pravda reports.
Notably, one of the provisions banned parties which registered less than one year to nominate candidates.
The new law also enlarged the strength of local election commissions, allowing all local branches of political parties to put their 3 candidates on the commissions.
The Regions-led majority voted down alternative bills introduced by NUNS, Arseny Yatseniuk and BYuT’s Biriuk allowing independent candidates to run for mayor’s office.
