Will Yanukovych change local elections law to make way for Tihipko and Yatseniuk?
Pres Yanukovych has okayed changes to the local elections law, Dzerkalo tyzhnia says, referring to its sources among presidential insiders. Until now, Yanukovych has approved two changes. The first will cancel a provision allowing parties with only above-one-year registration to nominate their candidates. The second change will liberalize and change the procedure of forming electoral commissions.
In line with it, every one of Rada’s five factions will be represented by 3 members, regardless of how many parties belong to a faction. Another 3 members will be chosen by casting a die among all other parties registered by the justice ministry.
The source indicates that other changes in the election law may be made as the bill is finalized by Yanukovych administration.
There are several reasons why Pres Yanukovych had a change of heart.
First, the election law was criticized by experts in Ukraine, Europe and the USA.
Second, the law restricted the opportunities of young parties and the ruling coalition allies, specifically Serhy Tihipko and Arseny Yatseniuk.
Third, the law creates comfortable terms for Yulia Tymoshenko’s political party by eliminating her rivals registered less than one year before the voting day.
Forth, the law bans individuals without partisan affiliation to nominate themselves for mayors.
