Donetsk lawmakers firm on making Russian regional language in defiance of court ruling

July 16, the Donetsk appellate court invalidated the May 18, 2006 decision of the Donetsk oblast council declaring, contrary to the Constitution, Russian a regional language.

Thus, it took the Donetsk court 4 years to pass its ruling instead of the 2 months required by the law.

This led Ukrainian organizations in Donetsk to accuse the court of gross procrastination.

Unperturbed, the Donetsk council head Anatoly Blyzniuk has already declared that the council’s next session will again make Russian a regional language.

Blyzniuk accepted the court ruling but said that this time Donetsk lawmakers will rectify the flaws of their original decision and pass a new one making Russian as an official language in the area.
