Russian fleet inspires Crimean separatists, Tatar leader says
Speaking to UNIAN Aug. 14, the leader of Crimean Tatars Mustafa Dzhemilev warned that Russia’s Black Sea Fleet may drag Ukraine in foreign wars. “We believe there shouldn’t be any foreign bases on Ukraine’s territory. The more so of the countries in which a large part of their political establishment have territorial claims to Ukraine,” he stressed.
Given the role the BSF played in the 2008 Russian-Georgian war, we believe the fleet posses a threat of entangling Ukraine in foreign wars,” Dzhemilev warned.
“We also believe the BSF presence in Crimea incites pro-Russian separatist forces to anti-Ukrainian actions, endangers Ukraine’s territorial integrity and promotes a threat of an interethnic conflict on the peninsula,” the leader of Crimean Tatars said.
The Kharkiv agreement extending the stationing of BSF for another 30 years did not cause enthusiasm among the Crimean Tatars, Dzhemilev added.
