SBU detain five Ukrainians who threatened to blow up buses in Kyiv to get cash

In the early hours of Aug. 8, an unidentified person called the security service demanding $600,000 and threatening to blow up Kyiv busses if the ransom was not paid, SBU press service Aug. 9 release runs. The SBU agreed to pay up, delivering the money to Pyryatyn on the Kyiv-Kharkiv highway. As the sum was handed over to the criminals, SBU operatives seized one of them, a 17-year old chemistry student.

Soon, the SBU netted another 3 members of the gang, all unemployed and all residents of Pyryatyn.

According to the SBU, the gang members learned how to make explosives via the Internet.

As the homes of the suspects were searched, the SBU found the stuff needed to make home-made explosives, including 100 kg of sulfuric acid in jerkins and other chemicals for making bombs, as recommended by Internet sites.

The officials also captured 4 kg of explosives.
