Russia top brass ask Putin to come to defense of arrested Ukraine customs official
Two high-ranking Russia admirals, both Heroes of Russia, have appealed to Premier Putin to come to the defense of their former colleague, ex-head of Ukraine Customs who was recently arrested for allegedly sanctioning the takeover of gas owned by RosUkrEnergo, Fakty reports July 29.Yulia Tymoshenko tried to step in to shield her former cabinet official, saying Makarenko acted on the orders received from her.
In his army days, Anatoly Makarenko was deputy CO of a nuclear cruiser in the North Sea fleet.
Now his former colleagues decided to come to his rescue. The appeal to Putin to interfere in the conflict was signed Vice Admirals Mykhail Motsak and Anatoly Baglayev and Rear Admiral Vladimir Makeyev, also four other rear admirals and heads of Russian military trade union.
His former colleagues describe Anatoly Makarenko as an honest man deeply respected by Russia navy officers and urge the Ukrainian authorities to release Makarenko from custody. They believe Makarenko’s arrest was undeserved.
