Ukraine Helsinki human rights group board member denied entry in Russia
Russian border guards banned entry in Russia to Vasyl Ovsienko, Kharkiv Helsinki group coordinator and former Soviet dissident with 13 years spent in Soviet concentration camps. Officials said his name was in the black list of persons banned to travel to Russia, Helsinki group July 23 website statement runs.Ovsienko was going to visit a former Soviet concentration camp in the Perm oblast where he did time in 1981-1987. Other Ukrainian patriots who were in the same camp at the same time included Vasyl Stus, Oleksa Tyhyj, Yury Lytvyn, Levko Lukyanenko, Mykhailo Horyn, Ivan Hel among others.
Ovsienko was going to visit the Perm-36 museum of dissidents where he is member of the museum board. His last visit to the museum was in 2005.
Vasyl Ovsienko was scheduled to participate in the roundtable titled “The collapse of the USSR: plusses and minuses.”
Most probably, the statement runs, the Russian security service banned entry to Ovsienko based on his recent critical publications which run counter to Putin’s standards of democracy.
