Regions heavyweights won’t reinvest Yanukovych with Kuchma’s powers, expert says
Regions won’t risk pushing ahead to cancel the 2004 constitutional reform. They will stop at the last moment and propose some minor changes which will leave the existing system intact, Kyiv’s noted political expert Mykhailo Pohrebynsky told ZIK in a commentary July 21.Just to cancel the 2004 reform would make little sense as it will lead to a host of new problems. Regions will think twice before canceling the reform, Pohrebynsky is sure.
The existing political regime has shown a trend of achieving European standards, something the political elite and the bulk of Ukrainians want. This means that Ukraine can not embrace an authoritarian system, the expert claimed.
If the cancellation of the 2004 reform gives Yanukovych much muscle, every issue will be resolved in his office, and there won’t be any politics because politics entail search for coordination and compromises, Pohrebynsky added.
