SBU chief cannot moonlight as boss of media holding, RWB say
It is inadmissible that a head of Ukraine security service should be a manager of a media holding, General Secretary of Reporters without Borders Jean-Francois Juliar said, speaking on the 5th Kanal TV.“It is a true conflict of interest,” the RWB official said, referring to Valery Khoroshkovsky, the head of SBU.
“We were told he owns many TV channels. It is absolutely inadmissible,” Ukrayinska Pravda quotes Juliar as saying.
After meeting with TV channels editors, notably the 5th Kanal and TBi, the head of RWB said he believes there is government pressure on the media in Ukraine.
“Political pressure also is applied to courts to deprive them of independence and impartiality. If nothing is done about it, you will find yourself in a situation when the leading channels will be closed,” the RWB head added.
