“Reporters” astonished by lengthy summer vacations of Ukraine officials
Activists of “Reporters Without Borders,” a media watchdog, decided not to reschedule their visit to Ukraine due to the absence in Kyiv of Pres Yanukovych and Hanna Herman, his aide on the freedom of the press, Komersant reports July 20.“We would like to meet not only with Yanukovych and Herman but also with Ukraine journalists,” RWB reps say.
“We are surprised that high-ranking officials in Ukraine can have 1.5 month summer vacations,” RWB stressed.
The visit to Ukraine of RWB officials is due to a large number of disturbing reports about increasing government pressure on the media.
“We would like to meet with journalists who went on a hunger strike, who were harassed, and we will come to Ukraine after Aug. 24,” the head of RWB said.
RWB will come up with its report on the condition of the freedom of the press in Ukraine after their visit.
