Authorities to dismiss 800 journalists of NTVC

Representatives of journalists employed by the National TV Company of Ukraine have protested against big lay-offs announced by the administration. The journalists have sent a letter to Pres Yanukovych, urging him to interfere in the conflict, UNIAN reports.

“The style of work of the newly-appointed NTVC administration is open disregard of the law, unwillingness to start a dialog with the trade union, and cynical disparity between words and deeds. Over 800 company employees have been notified about their dismissals due July 1, 2010,” the letter runs.

“Among them there are war veterans, Chornobyl relief workers, lone mothers with small children [privileged categories which cannot be dismissed in the usual way]. Contrary to the law, no alternative jobs have been proposed. The administration’s personnel policy is opaque and senseless,” the letter stresses.

The trade union has not received any substantiation of proposed cuts, any official document outlining the organizational targets of streamlining.

“We, the employees of the 1st National TV channel, are prepared for reforms. But we are strongly opposed to reforming the company using unlawful ways, and therefore we declare we do not trust the present managerial team headed by Yehor Benkendorf,” the letter to Yanukovych says.
