Saga about SBU harassment of UCU rector looks like publicity stunt, chief spy says

He thus explained the visit of an SBU operative to the rector: “Crime prevention is a sacred duty of law-enforcement. Therefore, when he get veritable information about instigating to unlawful actions, the only thing we do, and we will continue to do this, is to protect students from being dragged in these games.”
He called a mere coincidence that the SBU operative met with the rector on the eve of Pres Yanukovych visit to Lviv. “Our preventive work is not linked to visits of high-level officials. Although I agree that the Yanukovych visit may have motivated certain political forces.”
Asked why the SBU official wanted the rector to sign a document notifying him of criminal responsibility for participating in unauthorized protests,  Khoroshkovsky replied that the official wanted to make sure he did well in his mission. 
 “Don’t you think the episode has been overblown and looks like a stunt? I respect professionals in any field, including the university rector, and I am prepared to explain to him the attitude of the service. Let me stress, however, that no one will stop us from doing our work,” Khoroshkovsky warned. 
 “I can see several lines of attack taken by our opponents to destabilize the situation in Ukraine. One of them is the so-called infringement on the freedom of the press and SBU’s alleged role in restricting the freedoms of individuals. All this stinks. Let me stress again: we will be tolerant and open but we have our duties and we will be tough performing them,” the SBU head said.
