Azarov gives up on making Ukraine federal state
Currently, Ukraine can only be a unitary state as neither the public nor the power are ready to transform the country into a classical federal state, The Dzerkalo tyzhnya quotes vice premier for regional policy Viktor Tykhonov as declaring. “A state can go federal only if it is affluent. Neither Halychyna nor Donetsk can dream of breaking away. Only a rich state can afford to go federal,” Tylkhonov said.
Tykhonov was reserved on the need to reform the local government, saying the cabinet will get down to mapping out its proposals in the fall.
Interestingly, in his statement April 30, 2010 to The 2000, Tykhonov was for the decentralization of power and federalization of Ukraine.
