Herman invites media watchdog general secretary to visit Ukraine
Pres Yanukovych’s deputy chief-of-staff Hanna Herman has invited the general secretary of Reporters Without Borders, a media freedom watchdog, to come to Ukraine to assess the freedom of the press here, UNIAN quotes Herman as saying Apr. 29.The invitation comes as a response to RWB open letter to Pres Yanukovych in which the watchdog accused the Ukrainian authorities of mugging the press.
Pres Yanukovych supports further strengthening of the freedom of expression in Ukraine, Herman assured. Soon, she continued, 1-st Channel TV is to be made public. President Yanukovych also supports the idea to set up a public radio, Herman went on.
Meanwhile, at high-level meeting of countries leaders the number of journalists is limited, Herman said, citing the Kharkiv meeting between Yanukovych and Medvedev. As the hall where the documents were signed could seat 142 journalists, 79 seats were assigned to Ukrainian and 63 to Russian journalists.
“Not all who wished could come be present at the signing ceremony, Herman said. She regretted the fact, adding that such things can happen in established democracies
Therefore, Herman cannot describe the Kharkiv signing ceremony as the example of encroachment on the freedom of the press.
Herman warned RWB that the opposition is distorting the facts presenting them via journalists who cooperate closely with opposition parties.
