Appointment of Tabachnyk aimed to distract attention from lack of reforms
By resorting to high-profile actions, like the appointment of controversial Dmytro Tabachnyk as education minister, the Yanukovych regime wants to distract the attention of Ukrainians from real problems, head of the Center for Strategic Initiatives Volodymyr Stus told journalists March 15. “The Tabachnyk appointment is indirect evidence of the new cabinet’s unwillingness to implement reforms and its intention to distract the attention of society from acute issues. It is a masterpiece of political games,” IMK quotes Stus as saying.
The trick will be increasingly used by the regime, Stus predicts. “When Yushchenko’s decree awarding Ukraine top medal to nationalist Stepan Bandera is cancelled by Yanukovych, our nationalists will raise such hubbub that for three months everyone will forget about the promised reforms. By that time, the regime will cancel mandatory use of Ukrainian in advertising,” the expert noted.
“Tabachnyk plays the role of a lightning arrester for the regime,” Stus summed up.
