No funding for snap elections, Yanukovych says

Speaking to the ICTV talk show audience March 7, Pres Yanukovych said there is no funding for pre-term parliamentary elections in the budget. “We have to develop our economy. We have to overcome the recession triggered off by the preceding cabinet and world economic crisis,” he said

“I believe, we will manage to form a ruling majority, professional cabinet and effective system of government, with all branches working in unison,” the president stressed.

“Rada lawmakers realize it only too well that their voters are at the end of the tether. They realize, too, that the future elections may bring unexpected results to some,” Yanukovych added.

“We must unite, stop political wars and start working for the sake of Ukraine, establish order in the country,” he went on.

    • Only in the mind of a particular spammer does the notion of taking the vote away from the people, and giving it to a group of legally unaccountable oligarchs seem more "democratic" than a direct plebicite... It's absured on its face. Upwards of 80% of Ukrainians prefer a strong president who is directly elected by the people.

    • Yes Ukraine wasted its resources spending money on the Presidential elections. The President should have been elected by a constitutional majority of Ukraine's Parliament and not a direct election. More resources and money should be spent in developing an effective parliamentary system of representation. Reform the system then hold fresh elections. Put an end to the idea of the head of state being directly elected. A total wast of money. resources and effort.

Yanukovych needs to go back to the negotiating table and work with Bloc Tymoshenko in seeking support for a coalition of reform and stability. Any coalition that relies on the support of Our Ukraine will not be stable and will not resolve the real issues confronting Ukraine today.

Until Ukraine's politicians put the interests of Ukraine ahead of their own power struggle the sooner Ukraine will begin to establish a truly independent and democratic state. one that is based on democratic principles of equity and fairness and not based on who benefits most form the proposed system.

The principle of one vote one value and Equal rights of representation are fundamental in any proposed democratic model of governance.

Implement reforms first, establish a full Parliamentary model of governance in line with European values and European models and then hold fresh elections under the new rules/system.

Reject any proposal to implement a hybrid system or MMP system. They do not work
