Speaker Lytvyn dissolves coalition
Addressing Verkhovna Rada March 2, Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn announced the dissolution of the coalition. The reason for dissolution, Lytvyn said, was the present coalition’s failure to provide documents [lists of 226 lawmakers] confirming the existence of a majority.
In a related move, the Party of Regions has plans to hold a vote of confidence in the cabinet on March 3 and sack the government of Yulia Tymoshenko.
Meanwhile, lawmaker Roman Zvarych has threatened to take Speaker Lytvyn to court for disbanding the coalition.
Zvarych has accused Lytvyn of violating the law “On Verkhovna Rada procedures.”
Speaking to journalists March 2, Zvarych pointed out three reasons for disbanding VR: the stoppage of VR work, dissolution of a coalition by majority members, and the failure of a majority coalition to have 226 members.
The numerical strength of the present coalition could be reduced only due to the withdrawal of one of the member factions from the coalition, Zvarych stressed. He said that no faction has taken a decision to quit the coalition.
“Since I am convinced that the speaker has flagrantly violated VR procedures, I’m going to appeal to the administrative court,” Zvarych warned.
