As premier, Azarov is bad news for Regions
Arseny Yatseniuk looks like the best bet for premier for Yanukovych, deputy head of Agency for Modeling Situations Olexy Holobutsky told ZIK Feb. 22.PR could afford to appoint one of its own candidates for premier only if it had the majority in Verkhovna Rada. Under the circumstances, PR has to seek compromises with other political forces, the expert says.
If Serhy Tihipko becomes premier, it may seem that he could deal effectively to reunite Ukraine. However, Yanukovych is aware that in this case he would be promoting a rival that appeals to voters in Eastern and Southern Ukraine, the areas regarded as his turf by Yanukovych, Holobutsky notes.
Yatseniuk, the expert says, can be a better option for Yanukovych. “Yatseniuk is targeted at voters in Western and Central Ukraine. If he succeeds as premier, Yanukovych will get all the praise for consolidating Ukraine. If not, Yatseniuk will become yet another Orange failure and whipping boy.”
Regarding the possibility for Azarov to be named as premier, this is bad news for many Regions members as well as for many other parties, the expert says.
