Yushchenko faced with dilemma whether to sign Regions-favoring bill into law – Serhy Taran
Feb. 3 bill passed by VR and cancelling quorums in electoral commissions was a test of a new de-facto Regions-led majority in the legislature. However, the main problem is whether Yushchenko will sign the bill into law, director of the International Institute of Democracy Serhy Taran told ZIK Feb. 4.Meanwwhile, Yushchenko is eager to have pre-term parliamentary elections as soon as possible, expecting to make it into VR to remain in big politics, Taran continued.
“However, given a chain of recent votes in PR indicating the de-facto existence of a new majority coalition, Yushchenko may realize that there won’t be snap parliamentary elections and there is little sense for him to back Yanukovych,” the expert said.
Consequently, the new law will be an acid test of Yushchenko’s declared commitment to democracy, Taran argued.
According to Taran, the major negative of the new law is not that it introduces undemocratic procedures for the work of electoral commissions, but rather that it changes the rules of the game during the electoral campaign, something that puts into question the propriety of the new law.
