Russia goes public on new gas-supply contract with Ukraine

Speaking live to the Ekho Moskvy Radio Dec. 31, Gazprom’s representative Sergei Kupriyanov said Ukraine will buy 33.75 billion cu.m. of gas next year, Ukrayinska Pravda reports.

This reduced amount of gas brings to naught the likelihood of Russian sanctions for not buying the contracted amount of gas, Kupriyanov confirmed.

“In December supply contracts with Ukraine were revised. Originally, Ukraine was to buy 52 bln cu.m. of gas in 2010. Since we saw that Ukraine economy won’t be able to consume this amount, we lowered the figure to 33.75 bln. No sanctions will be imposed on Ukraine,” the Russian official said.

Earlier, Russia complained of losses running up to $1 bln for the failure of Ukraine to buy the contracted amounts of gas.

Kupriyanov also confirmed that Russia has rescinded its complaint to the Stockholm court.

The official confirmed that supplies of Turkmeni gas to Russia will be resumed on Jan. 9.

Russia and Turkmenistan have sorted out all knotty problems, he said, refusing to specify the contract details.

Supplies of Turkmeni gas to Russia were cut in April after an emergency at the Turkmen pipeline. Turkmenistan used to sell up to 50 bln cu.m. of gas in the past.
