Yushchenko acts like Yanukovych proxy – Tomenko

Declaring Oct. 28 that he will sign the law increasing salaries and pensions, Pres Yushchenko openly sided with Yanukovych, acting like his proxy, vice-speaker Mykola Tomenko said, speaking to journalists in Lviv Oct. 29.

“We didn’t expect Yushchenko to side with Yanukovych in this issue. We will do everything to explain to Ukrainians that the implementationof the law will create chaos in the economy. Let’s see whether Yushchenko will finally sign the bill into law. His Oct. 28 declaration was a shock for politicians. The presiden, who claims to be the guarantor of the constitution, is ready to do everything Yanukovych wishes,” Tomenko said.

No serious expert, economist or employer can tell that by raising salaries and pensions stability can be reached, Tomenko argued. “Worst hit will be private businesses which will have to raise salaries of their employees. Entrepreneurs will be forced to lay off workers. By insisting on the law, Yanukovych and Yushchenko have stepped on a criminal way of cutting jobs. They are ready to ruin the economy to show Premier Tymoshenko’s cabinet is ineffective,” Tomenko stressed.

The International Monetary Fund criticized the new law and urged Yushchenko to veto it. In a similar move, Premier Yulia Tymoshenko asked Yushchenko to veto the law.
