Ukraine may get a caretaker cabinet
VR deputy speaker Mykola Tomenko says the opposition shadow cabinet’s center of activity has shifted to the president’s office, VR press service says.Commenting on the rumors about the cabinet’s likely resignation and election of Regions’ Mykola Azarov as caretaker premier, Tomenko said such scenario is possible as campaign statements emanating from Yushchenko team and Yanukovych team almost coincide, something which allows to assume that these two leaders will join their forces against Tymoshenko.
These two political forces have long been in talks about the resignation of the current cabinet and formation of a caretaker cabinet before the end of the presidential election campaign in mid-January, 2010. The pro-presidential Our Ukraine is pushing toward a decision to quit the coalition. OU is also raising signatures in the Rada in favor of forming a caretaker cabinet, Tomenko warned.
According to the deputy speaker, Yushchenko and Yanukovych teams have made substantial headway in their talks.
“Cooperation between both teams have picked up. It can be assumed that, given the willingness of other political parties, Regions and Our Ukraine can make a deal. However, I am skeptical that the caretaker cabinet will be effective. History says that only such cabinets are effective which work for the good of the country, not against some political team,” Tomenko concluded.

- 60% of Our Ukraine and 100% of Party of Regions together do not have sufficient numbers to pass a resolution of no confidence in the current government. It would be counter productive and would be seen for what it is opportunism. More importantly there i no real advantage. Party of Regions may prefer to cut a deal with block Yulia Tymoshenko following the Presidential elections. The other factor is Lytvyn and the Communist Party. I am sure they would prefer to wait until the Presidential election is resolved.
