WWII UPA soldiers to march for recognition in Kyiv tomorrow
Soldiers of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army, UPA, will stage a march in Kyiv’s Taras Shevchenko park to demand the recognition of UPA as WWII combatants, pokrova.org.ua reports.Oct. 14 is a religious holiday dedicated to the protective veil of the Holy Mother and the day of the UPA creation.
The march will be held under the slogan “Bandera is our hero!”
Following the march, there will be a gala concert in Kyiv’s central square starting at 18.00, with popular singing groups performing.
On Oct. 14, 2008, police detained 140 participants of the UPA march for violating public order, they said. The marchers used tear gas against the police. The police accused the marchers of being in possession of sticks and shields with which they tried to attack policemen. 22 officers were rushed to the hospital suffering from being poisoned by unidentified gas. 16 officers complained they had been beaten during the clashes.
This year, 4,000 thousand police will protect public order during the UPA march and festivities. Kyiv mayor’s office expects a turnout of about 50,000.
