Police minister on track to prosecute Central bank’s managers
Interior Minister Yury Lutsenko wants to bring to account Central bank managers for abuse of office during the bail-out program for commercial banks, Lutsenko said, speaking live on 1+1 TV channel Sept. 27.Prosecutors are investigating the roles of Central bank managers in bailing out commercial banks and the lack of action shown by them which led to the theft of tens of billions of hryvnias. “No one checked on the mortgage of the same land plot by a number of commercial banks to receive UAH 100 billion in bail-out money.
To bring the cases to court, we need to run a large number of examinations which are expected to take 6 months to complete, the minister said.
It would facilitate the prosecution if the president [to whom the prosecutor general and central bank governor are accountable] gave orders to these officials to provide all the needed documents and speed up investigation. Meanwhile, the Central bank refers to banking secrecy and refuses to cooperate, the minister complained. “So far, I can see no wish to cooperate on behalf of the president and Central bank,” Lutsenko went on.
