Ukraine eager to manufacture aircraft with Libya
Talks on a joint production of short-range Antonov passenger planes have begun in Tripoli between Premier Tymoshenko and Libyan officials. The rumor is thick that appropriate preliminary agreements are in the pipeline, UNIAN reports Sept. 2.Ukraine can offer AN-38 short-range passenger plane for manufacture in Libya. AN-38 can use mud air-strips and operate in the whole of Africa, the head of Antonov concern, Dmytro Kiva, said.
Experts are to analyse the issue and a memorandum on cooperation is expected to be signed in the next 2 days, Kiva continued.
Premier Yulia Tymoshenko wants cooperation in aircraft manufacturing to be stepped up, Kiva said. “She is the one who makes this cooperation tick. She is behind the initiatives to build up trust with Libya as this country can open African markets for Ukraine,” the Ukrainian official noted.
Ukraine will also set up a servicing and repair center for Antonov models currently operated by Libya. Libya’s fleet of Antonovs presently stands at 30 aircraft.
