Lytvyn warns Yushchenko against scoring political points out of human tragedy

Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn warned politicians against cashing in on the death of Valery Olijnyk during a squabble involving a BYUT lawmaker, UNIAN quotes Lytvyn as saying on the First National TV channel June 25.

Lytvyn called Olijnyk's death a tragedy, expressing his condolences to Olijnyk’s family.

He said no one can tread on the dead man and his family.

Many, Pres Yushchenko including, are trying to gain political points out of the tragedy, Lytvyn said.

Commenting on Yushchenko’s call to lawmakers, himself including, on the need to cancel deputy immunity against prosecution, Lytvyn remarked that the incumbent could have done this in the draft of his recent constitutional initiatives.

Lytvyn then advised Yushchenko to appeal to VR factions that have enough votes to lift deputy immunity, BYUT and Regions. “Appealing to the VR speaker is the same as appealing to the skies, as, despite all my support and will, such changes should be put to the vote,” he added. Therefore, Lytvyn continued, politicians should table appropriate bills, not play on human tragedies.

Lytvyn said the accident must be investigated and the public be informed. VR will set up a commission to probe into the murder of Olijnyk.

According to media reports, Valery Olijnyk, 53, died of shot wounds allegedly inflicted by Viktor Lozinsky, a BYUT lawmaker. A rayon prosecutor and rayon police sheriff have been reportedly involved in the murder which happened June 16.
