Tymoshenko pledges to repay devalued FSU savings of Ukrainians when she becomes president

Yulia Tymoshenko will have more possibilities to repay the devalued Oshchadbank savings of Ukrainians after presidential election, she told journalists Apr. 9.

The LIgaBiznesInform quotes her as saying: “Dear friends, you were able to see how everything was done to stop me from repaying the 1,000 hryvnia deposits, how the honest privatization was stalled. As a result, highly placed officials representing other branches of power [Tymoshenko refrained from naming Pres Yushchenko – Ed.]. I regret it very much. I hope that after the presidential election I’ll have more opportunities to repay the savings of Ukrainians.”

Amid accusations of bleeding the budget and triggering inflation, Premier Tymoshenko began the repayment of devalued savings on Jan. 11, 2008, soon after she became premier and in accordance with her campaign promises. In total, the government allotted hryvnia 5.760 billion for the purpose, saying it was the first stage of repayments.
