”Orangists fooled half of Ukraine in 2004 on Maidan,” Viktor Yanukovych claims

Addressing a rally March 27 on Maidan [Kyiv’s central square and scene of 2004 Orange revolution], Regions leader Viktor Yanukovych said half of Ukrainians were fooled by the Orangists and the moment of truth has come, ZIK’s correspondent reports.

In 2004 the Orangists spoke of democracy but replaced it with political pragmatism; they destroyed the courts and law-enforcement, Yanukovych continued.

Even if Ukraine gets credits from other countries, “ordinary Ukrainians will have to pay for them,” he stressed.

To amass the money to repay the credits, the regime proposed to raise the retirement age and sells gas to the populace at European prices, Yanukovych added. He bashed out at the transportation tax law and the 13% excise tax on imports passed by the ruling coalition and soon cancelled due to their inefficiency.

“This regime must resign, both the president and premier,” Yanukovych concluded.

Announcing the much-advertised rally, Regions pledged to gather 15,000 supporters. In fact, the crowd was a mere 2-5 thousand-strong.

Speaking to our correspondent on Maidan, Regions prominent lawmaker Hanna Herman said the crowd was thinner than announced because only PR activists were to come to Kyiv because the organizers didn’t want to block traffic on the Khreshchatyk.

Herman also said that March 31 [when Regions threatened to block Verkhovna Rada] can start a countdown for snap parliamentary elections if Regions demands have not been met.

March 31, Premier Tymoshenko is set to present her cabinet’s action plan to overcome the recession, but Regions have already dismissed it as ineffectual.
