Russia gets hysterical because it loses political leverage over energy policy in Europe – expert
The recent gas agreement between the EU and Ukraine shows that Europe acts fully consistent to the Ukrainian perspective. It sends a very positive signal to Ukraine in the time of the ongoing recession. The gas deal cannot be viewed separately from another European project, the Eastern Partnership allowing Ukraine to become a regional leader in the post-Soviet space, political expert Volodymyr Tsybulko told ZIK on March 25.The expert said he was surprised by Russia’s hysterical attitude toward the gas declaration between Europe and Ukraine. “The Russians are wary because their political influence on energy markets in Europe may diminish,” Tsybulko claimed.
Comment by ZIK
Head of Russia Duma committee for foreign relations Konstantin Kosachev called the gas declaration between EU and Ukraine to modernize Ukraine gas pipelines “a delayed action mine.”
“It seems to me that EU representatives were misled by Ukrainian representatives into believing that Russia’s opinion should not be taken. They probably told the European officials that Russia will agree to any terms that the Ukrainian will negotiate with Brussels. This kind of tactics, Kosachev continued, is not typical of the relationships between Russia and the EU. It is rather typical of the present Ukrainian leaders who seek to access European structures and cut Russia from European integration processes.”
