Taras Chornovil against NATO membership aspirations for Ukraine
Ukraine stands a better chance of becoming a member of the European system of collective security than of NATO, first deputy chair of Verkhovna Rada committee for foreign affairs Taras Chornovil said, addressing an international conference in Brussels March 23, RBK-Ukrayina reports.“We are witnessing the emergence of a new system of collective security in Europe. It will definitely come into being within the nearest 10 years. Ukraine is faced with an alternative: to keep knocking at NATO’s door despite the lack of intention to accept Ukraine, or to offer its initiatives for the creation of the new security system. We have to consider the fact that joining NATO will entail new threats for Ukraine on its eastern borders. Besides, NATO membership is a dividing issue with Ukrainians. With all this in mind, I guess, Ukraine will benefit from offering its proposals to create a new security system. There are more options for Ukraine there,” Chornovil stressed.
In creating a new security system Ukraine will have to cooperate with Russia, as it will be impossible to set up a new security system in Europe without Russia.
