Cabinet’s 100 days over. Regions revving up for street protests. It isn’t a constructive way, warns Hrytsenko
The 100 days of the Tymoshenko cabinet are over, a deadline declared by the Party of Regions. Now PR say they are free to deliver on their past threat to resort to massive protests, saying the cabinet failed to ensure a marked improvement in the life of Ukrainians. Speaking to our correspondent in Kyiv, head of VR national defense and security Anatoly Hrytsenko criticized PR’s rent-a-mob strategy calling it highly erroneous. He said the PR’s call for a national strike is equally destructive as it will backlash on the workers and provoke employers into withholding wages for participation in the strike.
If rent-a-mob tactics are used by parties, with under-the-counter payments made to protesters, such protests will be aimed at scoring political, not social and economic, dividends.
There is another way of “building up a nation-wide pressure on the regime which will force it into making decisions.”
This kind of pressure can be made successfully only by NGOs and trade unions.
Answering a question whether the protests that took place in France are likely to happen in Ukraine, Hrytsenko replied that he expects Ukrainians to be wise enough and not to resort to forceful actions. Simultaneously, the Ukrainian authorities should show enough common sense to hear the first alarm calls and not let violence tactics win over.
