Stability will come after parliamentary and presidential elections - Yanukovych
Party of Regions leader Viktor Yanukovych has met with G-7 ambassadors in Kyiv. They focused on the domestic situation in the country, ways of overcoming the effects of the global recession and some international issues. “The inefficient and crowd-pleasing policies of the regime are the main causes of the political and economic snafu in Ukraine,” Yanukovych stressed. “This regime has to step down. Stability will come only after the presidential and parliamentary elections. In its present capacity the regime cannot work any more,” the PR chief is quoted by his press service as having said.Foreign diplomats voiced concern over reliability of gas transit due to some problems Ukraine has with Russia.
“We will do everything to ensure reliable gas transit,” Yanukovych assured. Ukraine’s own gas import is at risk due to a large, $2.5 billion, debt to Russia,” he added.
“Talks are on track to settle the debt, but their outcome is not clear because the relations of the present regime with Russia are very tense. This is our domestic problem. As regards Ukraine’s transit commitments, Ukraine will meet them, I am sure,” Yanukovych said.
Had talks on Russian gas supplies been handled by PR experts, the matter would have been solved, Yakovych noted.
“PR has always supported close ties with G-7 countries. Western ambassadors should be given credit for the present good-neighborly relations between Ukraine and the G-7 countries, he stressed.
Yanukovych thanked G-& ambassadors for backing up Ukraine’s EU integration aspirations and wished them a happy Christmas.
