Situation is so grave that Ukraine may lose its independence, Anatoly Hrytsenko warns

The crisis in Ukraine will not be a short term one, lawmaker and former Defense Minister Anatoly Hrytsenko said in his interview with The 2000 weekly, Hrytsenko’s press service reports.

“Unfortunately, all the possible crisis scenarios are grim. Ukraine is likely to nosedive and the crisis won’t pass quickly,” Hrytsenko is convinced.

Hrytsenko believes Ukraine will be recovering from the crisis for several years, resorting to austerity measures. “This is what lies ahead”, he summed up.

Simultaneously, Hrytsenko admits there are various ways in which the situation may unfold in Ukraine. “If Ukraine’s major players, Yanukovych, Yushchenko and Tymoshenko, become aware that the fate of the country is more important than the jobs they are after, a less tragic scenario is possible. It could take the shape of a stable tactical coalition of the warring parties in Verkhovna Rada in order to pass new laws. Such coalition will force the incumbent into a more productive modus operandi, leaving him with the realization that he can no longer veto the laws right, left and center in order to rock the boat further.”

Eventually, Ukraine’s political leaders will mature to the idea of reshuffling the cabinet to strengthen it. “80% of the cabinet must be dismissed to give way to professionals and responsible managers. In such a case, Ukraine stands a chance of not being bogged down deep in the crisis,” he opined, calling it an optimistic scenario.

Commenting on the pessimistic scenario, Hrytsenko said that Ukraine might go into a nosedive. “The country will stall. In key sectors we will lose our independence, with our opponents dictating the terms and buying up our assets for a song. Ukraine may eventually turn into a territory. Unfortunately, such a threat exists and it is looming large,” the politician added.
