Medvedev pins Gazprom’s debt on Ukraine, says Hudyma

Yanukovych and his shadow Fuel Minister Yury Bojko went to Moscow and as a result of their unofficial talks the figure of Ukraine’s alleged debt to Russia for gas, $2.4 billion, appeared out of thin air. Ukraine’s total debt is made up of Ukraine’s own debt as a state and middleman RosUkrEnerho’s debt to Russia. It might surface soon that only a small share of this debt belongs to Naftohaz Ukrayiny, with the remainder being the debt for which the Russian state or Gazprom are responsible, because Ukraine is not the founder of RosUkrEnerho, Oleksa Hudyma, advisor on energy issues to the premier of Ukraine, told ZIK Nov. 21.

According to Hudyma, 50% of RosUkrEnergo is owned by Gazprom and the other half by individual owners who have nothing to do with Ukraine.

“I am sure that at least half of the debt, I do not have exact statistics, is the old debt by RosUkrEnergo, which is struggling now to remain afloat. It is no secret that Yury Boiko and Firtash are bending backwards to prevent the signing of supply contract between Russia and Ukraine for 2009, as they will lose gas markets and face huge losses or lost profits amounting to hundreds of millions annually,” Hudyma said.
