There won’t be any military power grab, Yushchenko says
Pres Yushchenko says it is important to have an effectively working Verkhovna Rada, Korrespondent quotes the incumbent as saying at ceremony to open a new hospital in Zhytomyr Oct. 23.“A country has a future only if it has an effectively working
parliament,” Yushchenko declared. He said his role is to see to it that
VR works effectively.
“Blocking VR work is undemocratic, illegal and non-constructive, no matter how you wrap it up.” The incumbent stressed that the political deadlock in Ukraine can be broken only with the help of the law and the constitution.
“We should not strike deals which can later be contested in courts,” Yushchenko added. He
said again that he favors snap parliamentary elections as a means of
breaking the present impasse.
The present line-up of parties inVR makes
it impossible to reach a consensus in VR, as has been evidenced by the
last two days. The point is not whether the snap elections will be
held or not. Dormant legislature costs the country more than the $85
million needed to fund the snap elections, he said.
There is only one way out of the political crisis: to let the people make its choice in the elections. There won’t be any military power grab: “No one will order tanks and interior ministry troops onto the streets.”
