BYUT doing all dirty work for Yushchenko, says Taras Chornovil

Yushchenko has originally intended to delay the snap elections till late December. Another 3-4 days, and it will be impossible to hold the elections on Dec. 7, as the Central Election Committee won’t be able to meet its deadlines. Subsequently, the incumbent will issue another decree setting a new date. This is so typical of our president. Therefore, BYUT is unknowingly involved in a game favoring the incumbent, defiant Regions lawmaker Taras Chornovil told ZIK Oct. 16.

He is convinced the president wants the snap elections to be held on Dec. 28 or Jan. 4 when the voter turnout will be minimal. “There is a question why Yushchenko tolerates the current see-saw battles in courts. My guess, he simply used BYUT to implement his plan. He didn’t risk delaying his decree announcing the snap elections because he was wary of something happening in the Verkhovna Rada. He is full of fear and mistrust, his insiders including,” Taras Chornovil opined.

It won’t help to appeal Yushchenko’s decree as the Supreme Arbitration Court is bogged down in politicking. “Yushchenko personally created this court ahead of snap parliamentary elections. Therefore, it would be stupid to expect any judicial activity from this court. We will see another decree setting a new date in late October,” T. Chornovil claims.

The lawmaker believes the chances of the Party of Regions teaming up with Our Ukraine in a coalition are high. There are 45-50 lawmakers in OU favoring such a coalition. Yushchenko’s golden dream was to create a PR-OU coalition in October, but since Tymoshenko got under fire for seeking a coalition with PR, OU faction was not prepared for such a step. “It is quite probable that, following an abortive vote in December, such a coalition will emerge. All the scenarios are aimed at getting rid of Tymoshenko,” the lawmaker says.

The PR is faced with a serious problem: as long as PR could rely on Renat Akhmetov’s backing, its policy was more or less adequate. With the RosUkrEnerho winning much ground in the PR and funneling increasingly more money in the party war chest, blackleg tactics took over. “RosUkrEnerho is calling the shots in the PR and is its most serious challenge,” T. Chornovil said.
