Embassies of EU countries charge fees left, right and center
Ukraine’s secret service, SBU, is prepared to submit evidence of violations by embassies of EU member countries in Ukraine of the agreement on simplified travel, SBU Director Valentyn Nalyvajchenko said, addressing a session of the VR committee on European integration, The Ukrayinska Pravda reported June 18.V. Nalyvajchenko says European officials should come in person to Ukraine to see how agreements on simplified travel are violated.
“Let European officials come here to see how the implementation of agreements is destabilized, with the simplest procedures, like getting a visa-application form via the Internet, complicated beyond any measure and the fees that the Ukrainians are charged.“
The chief of SBU also says his agency has all the proof of violations. “We can demonstrate you how interior troops collect fees from Ukrainians for admission to consulates and how technical staff (Ukrainian nationals) collect money from visa applicants as well as go-betweens (persons collecting payments for obtaining visas for their clients) and others whom Europeans would like to see.”
Wide-spread corruption has been caused by unclear and opaque visa-issuance procedures, V. Nalyvajchenko complains.
In January, Ukraine parliament ratified the agreement on simplified travel between Ukraine and the EU.
